Gateway PGA Joe Dodich Golf Professional of the Year

Special Awards Description & Criteria

The Gateway PGA Joe Dodich Golf Professional of the Year Award is one of the highest honors the Association can bestow on a working club professional whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA Professional. This award embraces a wide range of services executed by the club professional.

Joe Dodich exemplified what it meant to be a working professional in the PGA of America. When asking his peers to describe him, it often gets brought up that Joe was a true gentleman unlike any ever seen in the Gateway PGA. Having this award named for Mr. Dodich is only a small repayment for what he has done for our Section.

Gateway PGA Joe Dodich Golf Professional of the Year Guidelines:

  • Demonstration of outstanding qualities of leadership
  • Demonstration of strong moral character
  • Maintain a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf
  • Well-regarded as a model of PGA Golf Professional

Criteria to Measure:

  1. Overall performance as a Golf Professional
  2. Service to the Section and the Association
  3. Leadership ability
  4. Image and ability to inspire fellow Golf Professionals
  5. Promotion and growth of the game of golf

 

Assistant Golf Professional of the Year

The Gateway PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year Award is the highest achievement the Association can bestow on a working assistant professional whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA Assistant Professional. This award embraces a wide range of services executed by the Assistant professional.

Gateway PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year Guidelines:

  • Demonstration of outstanding qualities of leadership
  • Demonstration of strong moral character
  • Maintain a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf
  • Well-regarded as a model PGA Assistant Golf Professional

 

Gateway PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year Criteria:

Criteria to Measure:

  1. Overall performance as an Assistant Golf Professional
  2. Service to the Section and the Association
  3. Leadership ability
  4. Image and ability to inspire fellow Golf Professionals
  5. Promotion and growth of the game of golf

Horton Smith Award

The PGA Horton Smith Award is designed to recognize a PGA Professional who is the model educator of PGA Golf Professionals. This award is designed to give special recognition to an individual Gateway PGA Professional for outstanding and continuing contributions to professional education.

Horton Smith Award Guidelines:

  • Demonstration of outstanding qualities of leadership
  • Demonstration of strong moral character
  • Maintain a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf
  • Well-regarded as a model educator of PGA Golf Professionals

 

Horton Smith Award Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Contributions to Section and National PGA education programs
    2. Contributions and development of articulates related to and benefiting education
    3. Contributions to building the image of both the PGA Golf Professional and the Association
  2. Selection Process
    1. Nomination should be based on a candidate’s entire past experience and commitment for continuing one’s contributions and assistance
    2. Achievements during the past five years should be emphasized
    3. Awards Committee will select a recipient based on the criteria
  3. Ineligible Categories
    1. Previous year’s Horton Smith Award winner
    2. Class “F” and “Inactive” members
    3. Apprentices
    4. PGA National Headquarters Staff and PGA Section Staff

Teacher of the Year Award

The Teacher of the Year Award is designed to recognize a PGA Professional who is an outstanding teacher of golf among the ranks of Gateway PGA membership. This award is based on a professional’s overall performance in teaching; unusual, innovative and special teaching programs initiated or implemented; articles published; as well as outstanding golfers the professional has instructed.

Teacher of the Year Award Guidelines:

  • Recognized as an outstanding teacher of golf among the ranks of Gateway PGA membership
  • Initiation and/or implementation of unusual, innovative and/or special teaching programs
  • Publication of articles, books, magazines, etc.
  • Instruction of outstanding golfers

 

Teacher of the Year Award Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Overall performance in teaching at the facility, Section and National levels
  2. Selection Process
    1. Nomination should be based on a candidate’s entire past experience and commitment for continuing one’s contributions and assistance
    2. Achievements during the past five years should be emphasized
    3. Awards Committee will select a recipient based on the criteria
  3. Ineligible Categories
    1. Previous year’s Teacher of the Year Award winner
    2. Class “F” and “Inactive” members
    3. Apprentices

Bill Strausbaugh Award

The Bill Strausbaugh Award is designed to recognize PGA Professionals who by their day-to-day efforts have distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community.

Bill Strausbaugh Award Guidelines:

  • Demonstration of record of service to the Section and the Association
  • Proven leadership ability
  • Involvement in civic activities and local charitable causes within the community
  • Recognized as someone of outstanding character

 

Bill Strausbaugh Award Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Level of service to the Section and Association
    2. Leadership ability
    3. Contributions to building and growing the image of the game of golf, the PGA Professional and the Association
    4. Involvement and contribution toward improving the skills of other PGA Professionals
    5. Involvement in civic activities within the community.
    6. Involvement with local charitable causes
    7. Overall integrity and recognition as a person of outstanding character
  2. Selection Process
    1. Nomination should be based on a candidate’s entire past experience and commitment for continuing one’s contributions and assistance
    2. Achievements during the past five years should be emphasized
    3. Awards Committee will select a recipient based on the criteria
  3. Ineligible Categories

Youth Player Development Award

The Gateway PGA Junior Golf Leader Award recognizes the PGA Professional who is a leader in junior golf and who reflects the ideals of those who work with youth.

Youth Player Development Award Guidelines:

  • Demonstration of involvement in the promotion and development of junior golf at the club level
  • Support of Sectional/National junior golf programs
  • Proven interest, concern and ability to provide opportunities and experience for juniors to learn and play golf
  • Recognized as someone of outstanding character

 

Youth Player Development Award Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Involvement in the promotion and development of junior golf at the club level and within the community
    2. Support of the Gateway PGA Junior Golf Programs including Gateway Junior Tournament, Foundation In-School Program, Play Golf America, and/or other Junior Golf effort.
    3. Overall image, service and leadership in the junior golf arena
    4. Overall integrity as an individual and acceptance by junior golfers as a person of outstanding character
  2. Selection Process
    1. Nomination should be based on a candidate’s entire past experience and commitment for continuing one’s contributions and assistance
    2. Achievements during the past five years should be emphasized
    3. Gateway Awards Committee will select a recipient based on the criteria
  3. Ineligible Categories
    1. Previous year’s Youth Development Award winner
    2. Class “F” and “Inactive” members
    3. Apprentices
    4. PGA National Headquarters Staff and PGA Section Staff

Patriot Award

The “PGA Patriot Award” bestows special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional, who personifies patriotism through the game of golf and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to the men and women who have valiantly served and protected the United States of America.

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be a PGA member in good standing.
  • Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA member.
  • Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

 

Eligibility:

The following persons are ineligible:

  • Class “F” or “Inactive” members; Apprentices;
  • Gateway PGA Section Staff and PGA Section

 

Criteria:

Patriot Award minimum criteria:

  • Candidate must currently be a Class A PGA member in good standing and involved in military programming efforts.
  • Candidate must have maintained a substantial record of contribution and support to the United States Armed Forces and its Active Duty and Reserved personnel and veterans.
  • Candidate must have displayed proven interest, concern, and ability to provide opportunities and experience for active duty, reservists, and veterans to learn and play golf.
  • Candidate must have shown an ability to inspire fellow PGA members with an emphasis in the area of service to the military.
  • Candidate must have maintained a continual record of service, promotion of the game of golf and proven interest and ability to provide opportunities and experiences for military personnel to learn, play and participate in the game.

 

Guidelines for Selection:

The candidate will be considered on the basis of the following:

  1. Their entire PGA career with the primary emphasis on the service and commitment for the military;
  2. The overall contribution to programs and events including, but not limited to, PGA HOPE and Patriot Golf Day
  3. The overall involvement in the promotion and development of targeted golf programs at the club, Section and National levels, as well as within the community for military personnel and veterans;
  4. The active support and contribution of the Armed Forces and veterans through community activities at-large;
  5. Overall integrity and recognition as a person of outstanding character by PGA Professionals and leaders within the community;

 

Other Considerations:

The Patriot Award will be presented annually at the Awards Gala

Merchandiser of the Year (Awarded in Three Categories)

The Merchandiser of the Year Award is designed to recognize those Gateway PGA Professionals who have excelled as business persons/merchandisers in the promotion of golf. The PGA honors PGA Professionals in three categories: Private, Public and Resort facilities.

Merchandiser of the Year Guidelines:

  • Gateway PGA member in good standing

 

Merchandiser of the Year Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Demonstration of skill in planning and promotion of sales by presenting products to his/her market on a timely basis, and through the use of specialized merchandising techniques that include display and advertising
    2. Demonstration of superior business acumen to include but not limited to inventory control and all related accounting/financial practices
  2. Selection Process
    1. Any PGA member in good standing meeting the outlined requirements
    2. Gateway Awards Committee will select recipient based on criteria
  3. Ineligible Categories
    1. Last year’s Gateway PGA Merchandiser of the Year Award winner
    2. Class “F” and “Inactive” members
    3. Apprentices
    4. PGA National Headquarters Staff and Section Staff

     

Other Considerations:

President’s Plaque Award

This prestigious award is given to a member or individual who has shown an exceptional effort in growing the game of golf.

  • Support of Sectional/National growth of the game programs
  • Proven ability to provide opportunities and experience for growth of the game
  • Recognized as someone of outstanding character

 

President’s Award Criteria:

  1. Criteria to Measure:
    1. Involvement in the promotion and development of growth at the club level and/or within the community
    2. Support of the Gateway PGA Junior Golf Programs including Gateway Junior Tournament, Foundation In-School Program, Play Golf America, and/or other Junior Golf effort
    3. Overall image, service and leadership
    4. Overall integrity as an individual and acceptance by golfers as a person of outstanding character
