The Gateway PGA teed off at Spencer T. Olin for Stroke Play on Monday, June 12. The four men’s divisions were swept by Kyle Szyhowski (Norwood Hills CC) and Bob Gaus (Family Golf). Szyhowski shot a 68 (-4) on his way to wins in the regular and assistant divisions. Gaus shot an impressive 64 (-8) as he walked away with titles in the senior and super senior age groups. On the women’s side, Ali Wells (Gateway Section) shot a 77 (+5) to win the ladies division, while Barbra Blanchar shot an 80 (+8) in the senior women’s division.
Szyhowski had a great front nine with birdies on two par fours (holes three and seven) and a par five (hole nine). On the backside, he shot one-under, including back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15.
Multiple contestants in the field mentioned how well Gaus was playing when they entered the clubhouse. His front nine was one for the ages. Through five holes, he was three under with three birdies. On the 478-yard par five ninth hole, he made an eagle to end the front nine at five under. He kept rolling with three birdies on the back nine to finish the round with a 64 (-8).
