The Gateway PGA took to St. Louis Country Club for Stroke Play #2 on Monday, May 15 sponsored by StrackaLine. With over two inches of rain in prior days, the participants stretched their legs and walked the pristine course. Ultimately Devon Liberty (Westwood Country Club) took home the regular and assistants division with a score of 71 (E). One stroke behind him was playing partner Jeff Whitfield (The Quarry at Crystal Springs) who added to his trophy collection in the senior and super senior divisions.
Liberty, who started on one, recorded a par before going bogey-bogey on two and three. From there he started to turn things around by shooting one under through the rest of the front nine, including a birdie on five, a 525-yard par five. Liberty continued rolling on the back as he posted birdies on 10 and 11 and pars on 12-17.
After starting with three pars, Whitfield went plus-two on holes four through seven before ending the front nine three under. On hole eight Whitfield hit a birdie putt on the par four. He outdid himself on the ninth hole, a par five, as he grabbed his ball from the bottom of the cup after recording an eagle to move him to one-under through nine. On the backside Whitfield had one birdie and five pars on the way to shooting ending his round with a final score of 72 (+1)
