Nash Haxel of The Quarry at Crystal Springs and Mark Faulkner of Lake of Egypt Country Club used a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Cory Cowsert of Meramec Lake Golf Course and Chris Ferris of Algonquin Golf Club in the Pro Pro 999 tournament at Forest Hills Country Club on Monday, April 28. Haxel successfully defended his title after winning the event last year with Jeff Whitfield of The Quarry at Crystal Springs.
The tournament’s unique format is played on the club’s Championship and Valley courses. On the Championship Course, the front nine is best ball, while the back nine is a scramble. The Valley Course is played as Chapman alternate shot.
Haxel and Faulkner shot an impressive 92 (-10) over the 27 holes. In the best ball format, the team shot 2-under, which included a pair of birdies by Faulkner on holes 1 and 7. Their best score came in the scramble, where they shot 6-under. They concluded their day with a 2-under on the Chapman alternate shot.
Cowsert and Ferris also shot 2-under in the best ball format on the front nine of the Championship Course. On the back nine, they shot a 5-under 31, including an eagle on the par-5, 513-yard hole, 14th. They forced the playoff by shooting 3-under in the Chapman alternate shot.
