The Gateway Section hosted the annual Match Play Championship at St. Clair Country Club from Monday, May 13 – Wednesday, May 16. Alex Gorman (Cardinal Creek GC) battled through the field as a 48-seed to take the title over Ryan Roy (Bogey Hills CC).
Gorman opened the tournament with a 2&1 win over 17-seed Matt Stock (Greenbriair Hills CC) and played 19 holes with Chris Ferris (Algonquin GC). On day two, he knocked off the top seed and reigning Match Play champion Sam Lee (Greenbriar Hills CC) 1 up before upsetting 40-seed Miquel Romera Marco (Old Warson CC) 1 up. Gorman and Roy battled in the finals, with Gorman taking the match 4&2 and winning his first trophy in the Gateway Section.
The Match Play Championship was an exciting balance of new and experienced players. The Round of Eight included 48-seed Gorman, 40-seed Romera Marco, 20-seed Brian Fogt (Bellerive CC), 12-seed Kyle Szyhowski (Norwood Hills CC), 47-seed McKenna Montgomery (Whitmoor CC), 23-seed Jacob Seabaugh (Arena Golf), 3-seed Roy, and 11-seed Jeff Whitfield (The Quarry).
