Team Gateway pulled off a remarkable comeback at the Philbrick Cup. The Philbrick Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event between the Assistants from the Gateway Section and the South Central Section. The team captured its first-ever victory in the tournament. Entering the singles matches down 8 to 4, the team showcased its skill and determination, winning 8.5 out of 12 points on the final day.
The suspenseful finale was highlighted by Jake Seabaugh’s clutch chip-in for par on the 17th hole, leveling the match at 11.5 points. That left Kyle Szyhowski in the last match to play the 18th hole with a one-up lead in his match. Kyle hit a cluck shot in reaching the par-5 18th in two shots, just missing his eagle put but securing his birdie, clinching the triumph for Team Gateway.
Despite falling behind in the fourball and foursomes matches on day one, Team Gateway rallied on familiar turf at Osage National Golf Course. With perfect weather and consummate hospitality from Osage National, hosting the tournament in the Gateway Section for the first time added an extra layer of pride for Team Gateway, making their historic win even more meaningful.
The Gateway PGA extends its gratitude to everyone involved, especially the staff at Osage National, Everett Scrima, and Adidas Golf for outfitting the team as well as the South Central PGA Section for their spirited competition and for making the trip to the Gateway.
Congratulations Team Gateway!
