100 Holes for Heroes Marathon: A Day of Golf, Gratitude, and Giving

The sun had yet to rise, but Sunset Hills Country Club was already buzzing with activity. Carts were being fueled, Old Glory was raised, and 20 dedicated golfers gathered for a morning briefing, ready to take on a monumental challenge: playing 100 holes of golf in one day.

Jon DePriest, PGA, Director of Golf at Sunset Hills, outlined the goal: raise funds and awareness for PGA HOPE Gateway, the flagship military program of the PGA of America.
 “The money we raise allows us to continue our six-week programs,” DePriest explained. “These sessions help Veterans reconnect with their communities—PGA HOPE gives them the ability to reengage.”

The mission was clear, and each golfer came with a personal reason for playing.
 “My father served in the 101st Airborne, so we’re playing 101 holes in his honor,” said Marvin Herrod, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Sunset Country Club. “We’re doing this for all Veterans—to give them access to PGA HOPE.”

Several teams included PGA HOPE graduates themselves. U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Michael Guest joined the event at the invitation of his coach and PGA Member, Chris von der Linden.
 “PGA HOPE has been good to me,” Guest said. “I’ve seen firsthand the impact it has—not just the golf instruction, but the social aspect too. That part is just as important.”

With perfect weather and even a rainbow gracing the course, play moved quickly. By 12:15 p.m., every team had completed more than 50 holes. Club members enjoying the day could easily spot the marathoners—each cart proudly displayed an American flag fluttering behind it.

At 4:30 p.m., the final putts dropped on the 100th hole.

The day was a resounding success, raising over $45,000 for PGA HOPE Gateway. That impact would not have been possible without the dedication of Jon DePriest, PGA, Ben Jackels of Culver’s O’Fallon, Lance Flury, PGA, Callaway Golf, Blue Tees Speakers, Cobra/Puma, and the entire membership and staff of Sunset Hills Country Club.

Through their generosity—and the support of nearly 200 donors—the 2025 100 Holes for Heroes Marathon made a profound difference in the lives of local Veterans, while creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved.
