Gateway PGA Foundation In School Program
The Gateway PGA Foundation currently plays an active role in two inter-city schools. Imagine Academy of Environmental Science and Math is a charter school dedicated to improving the lives of inter-city St. Louis kids. The school has over 1,300 kids in attendance and provides personalized education for students from K-8 grade. Over 90% of these students are at or below the poverty level. The Gateway PGA Foundation allows our local PGA Professionals with an opportunity to introduce golf and life skills to these under-privileged students. Through the game of golf, these kids learn a discipline and a skill that often translates into their every day life. Gateway PGA Professionals have been fortunate to create relationships and mentor-ships that give these students an opportunity to continue with golf outside of school.
Innovative Concepts Academy is the second school that the Gateway PGA Foundation is working in partnership with. This school is the first of its kind in the country. This academy takes kids who have either been expelled from Missouri Public Schools or are in a rocky part of their lives. The goal of the Innovative Concept Academy is to give these young individuals an opportunity where society has closed the door. Because of Missouri Law, students who have been expelled from the public school system are not allowed to re-enter. Innovative Concept Academy and MERS Goodwill have stepped in to do something about these troubled youth. The school contains a police hub inside of the school as well as other preventative security measures for the protection of the teachers and students. The school offers an extensive food program as well as other activities that typically evade these young individuals. The Gateway PGA Foundation looks to their PGA Professionals as true mentors to these under-privileged and troubled youth. By introducing golf, we are able to give opportunity and hope to kids that need it so desperately.
